MARSHALL GOLD DISCOVERY PARK PROJECT
Who Buried John Wilson Marshall?
In 2019, an EDHGS member volunteered at the Library and Research Room at the Marshall Gold Discovery Park in Coloma, California. The objective was to identify the person who dug the gravesite for James Wilson Marshall (1810-1885), the man credited with discovering gold in California in 1848. The research effort required a transcription of the official, handwritten entries in the 1893-1895 journal of Francis Newton ("F.N.") Spencer, the El Dorado County Administrator/Coroner who administered the estate, detailing the death and burial of James Wilson Marshall. The subsequent research findings established the man responsible for digging Marshall's grave: Andrew Monroe (1846-1921). The research report identifies the extended family of Andrew Monroe and provides some details of his life until his death in 1921. Cited sources include digitized vital records, census records, newspaper clippings, documents, and photographs. The full research report is available here:
